First Light on Mars: Viking 1 Lands

Exactly seven years after Apollo 11, NASA's Viking 1 became the first spacecraft to land successfully on Mars and operate, returning the first clear pictures from the Martian surface.

Seven years to the day after Apollo 11 settled onto the Moon, a different kind of explorer reached a far more distant target. On 20 July 1976, NASA’s Viking 1 lander touched down on the plain of Chryse Planitia and became the first spacecraft to land on Mars and carry out its mission. [1]

A two-part spacecraft

Viking 1 was actually two craft in one: an orbiter that mapped the planet from above and a lander that descended to the surface. After arriving at Mars in June 1976, the orbiter spent weeks photographing the planned landing site so engineers could confirm it was safe before committing the lander. [2]

The first pictures from the surface

Minutes after landing, the lander returned the first photograph ever taken from the surface of Mars — a black-and-white image of its own footpad on the rocky ground, transmitted to confirm it had survived. [2] Color panoramas of a rust-tinted landscape and a pinkish sky followed. For the first time, people could see Mars not as a telescope’s smudge but as a place with a horizon.

The search for life

The Viking landers carried a suite of biology experiments designed to detect signs of microbial life in the Martian soil. The results were ambiguous: some instruments produced reactions that could have indicated biological activity, but the consensus interpretation attributed them to unusual soil chemistry rather than living organisms. [1] The question of past or present life on Mars remained open — and still drives missions today.

A long-lived pioneer

Built to last 90 days on the surface, Viking 1 far outlived its design life, operating until 1982. [2] Together with its twin, Viking 2, it returned tens of thousands of images and the first detailed data on Martian weather, soil, and atmosphere, laying the groundwork for every rover and lander that followed.
